Georgia Tech Volleyball Announces 2009 Schedule

June 19, 2009

ATLANTA - Georgia Tech's 2009 volleyball schedule is highlighted by a pair of home tournaments and a total of seven matches against teams that competed in the 2008 NCAA Tournament, head coach Tonya Johnson announced this week.

"I'm excited about our schedule this fall," Johnson said. "It is a very competitive schedule with good quality opponents. I think our preseason tournament schedule will certainly help us gauge where we are as a team before we begin ACC play, and I believe that the ACC is going to be very competitive this year. We will certainly do our best to be prepared and ready to play every match."

The Yellow Jackets begin the season August 28 when they host arch rival Georgia on the first day of the Georgia Tech Regency Suites Invitational, which will be held at O'Keefe Gym and also features the Mercer and Austin Peay volleyball teams.

The following weekend, Tech will play three matches at the Middle Tennessee Blue Raider Bash in Murfreesboro, Tenn., opening the tournament Friday, Sept. 4th against an MTSU team that advanced to the second round of last year's NCAA Tournament. The next afternoon, the Jackets will meet another postseason contender in Ohio before closing the tournament with a match against Northern Illinois later that evening.

Tech will kick off conference play when it meets Clemson on the opening day of the Georgia Tech Courtyard Classic, which runs Sept. 11-12, before closing out the non-conference portion of its schedule the following weekend, meeting Denver and Minnesota at the University of Denver Invitational.

Georgia Tech will play 19 conference matches over the final two months of the schedule, including two against North Carolina and one versus Duke before wrapping up regular season play Nov. 27 at Clemson. The Tigers, Blue Devils and Tar Heels all advanced to the second round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
