Former Hawai'i Standout Jennifer Carey Joins Tech Volleyball Staff

Jennifer Carey, a former standout setter at the University of Hawai'i, has been named an assistant coach for the Georgia Tech volleyball team, as announced Friday by Yellow Jacket head coach Bond Shymansky.
"It is great to have a player and person of Coach Carey's caliber joining our volleyball family," said Shymansky. "She brings a tremendous amount of experience as a player and knows the game as a coach. She's going to be a great asset on the recruiting trail and comes from one of the most well-established coaching families on the West Coast."
Carey joins the Yellow Jackets staff after spending two years as Texas A&M's director of volleyball operations. In that role, Carey was responsible for coordinating and organizing team travel, on-campus recruiting, tape exchange, equipment inventory and summer camps, exclusively for the volleyball program.
At Georgia Tech, the Newport Beach, Calif. native will serve as the Yellow Jackets' offensive coordinator and have the responsibilities of training setters, recruiting and operations.
"I'm extremely excited about joining the volleyball coaching staff," said Carey. "I feel that Georgia Tech has a great tradition in women's volleyball, and I look forward to being a part of working with such an exceptional group of athletes and coaches."
Prior to her appointment at Texas A&M, Carey worked as a sales and marketing executive at KHNL and K5 Television in Honolulu, where she also occasionally served as the station's color analyst for the University of Hawai'i's men's and women's volleyball matches.
Carey became the Rainbow Wahine's starting setter as a freshman, when she earned all-Western Athletic Conference second-team honors while leading Hawai'i to a 29-2 record, a NCAA Mountain Regional semifinal appearance and No. 8 final ranking in 1999.
Throughout her career, Carey directed Hawai'i to NCAA semifinal appearances, two No. 3 final national rankings and a 123-12 record in four years. She was a three-time member of the all-WAC second team and concluded her career ranked fourth on the all-time Hawai'i career assist records with 3,540.
Carey played professional volleyball in Germany in 2004 before returning to California to coach the Saddleback Valley Volleyball Club, which was the same club she played for as a junior. From 2005-06, she coached the Brazos Valley Volleyball Club in College Station, guiding the team to an overall record of 27-2 in two years.
Carey, 26, replaces Sally Polhamus, who accepted the head coaching position at Winthrop University in January.
"Everyone involved with our program is excited for the impact that Jennifer will make for this season and seasons to come," Shymansky concluded.
