Georgia Tech Volleyball Hangs on to Defeat Virginia Tech

The freshman duo of Laura DeMichelis and Talisa Kellogg combined for 37 kills to lead the Georgia Tech volleyball team to a 3-2 (30-25, 25-30, 30-20, 27-30, 15-10) win over Virginia Tech Friday night. With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 12-7, 8-2 ACC while the Hokies fall to 9-10, 4-6 ACC.
"Tonight was the first match where I've seen our team have fun whether they were up or down, and that was gratifying," said head coach Bond Shymansky. "It was a hard fought victory and my hat is off to Virginia Tech for playing a gritty game. Our freshman outside hitting tandem came through big for us again tonight but in the end it was clutch plays by Callie Miller and Nikki Kaminskas that made the difference. Our young team is still learning how to assert focus and perfection for an entire match but each night we show improvement."
The Jackets hit .235 in the match while holding the Hokies to a .179 percentage. In addition to DeMichelis and Kellogg, freshman Callie Miller recorded 11 kills and hit .348 while Ulli Stegemann added 10 kills. Senior Lindsey Laband posted 52 assists in the match.
Defensively, Tech posted 49 digs on the evening as Jennifer Randall had a team-best 12 saves. She was followed by Laband who had 10 digs, Michelle Kandell who added eight and Abby Showers who posted six.
At the net, the Jackets had 10 team blocks as Nikki Kaminskas recorded six block assists while Stegemann, Laband, Miller and Kellogg each added three total blocks.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Saturday when they host Virginia (13-6, 8-2 ACC) at 6 p.m. in O'Keefe Gymnasium.
