Volleyball Defeats Middle Tennessee State

Jennifer Randall had a career high nine kills, two solo blocks and hit .533 to lead the Georgia Tech volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-27, 30-19, 30-22) win over Middle Tennessee State University at the Miami University Invitational Saturday. With the win, the Jackets improve to 4-5 on the season while the Blue Raiders fall to 2-7.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Saturday evening when they take on IPFW in their final match of the Miami University Invitational at 4 p.m.
"Once again we were able to get a lot of contributions from a number of players today," said head coach Bond Shymansky. "I thought that Abby did a great job of running our offense and found ways to work a number of people into our offense today. It was great to see Ulrike play so well at the net, along with Jennifer Randall who was virtually unstoppable at the net today. Our plan is to carry some of this momentum into our final match this afternoon against IPFW as we keep preparing for our upcoming ACC schedule."
Offensively, the Jackets hit .340 in the match and held Middle Tennessee State to a .176 percentage.
For Tech, Lynnette Moster had 13 kills and recorded a .458 hitting percentage while Ulrike Stegemann had a career seven kills and hit .636. In addition, Laura Kuhn recorded nine kills and hit .667 followed by Jayme Gergen who had six kills and hit .400. Abby Showers ran the offense, recording a career-high 40 assists in the match.
Defensively, Tech had 37 digs in the match as Marisa Aston and Moster each recorded 10 digs. At the net, the Jackets were again dominating, posting 13 blocks in the match. Gergen led the team with seven block assists, followed by Kuhn who posted four block assists and Moster who had three.
The Blue Raiders were led by Andressa Lyra who had a match-high 20 kills and two block assists in the match.
In game one, the Jackets fell behind early, trailing by as many as six points on poor passing and several MTSU kills which went off the hands of Tech's block. With the score at 12-18, the Jackets scored on a tip into the server's corner, a tip to the middle of the court by Kuhn, a kill from Gergen, a solo block by Sauer, two MTSU hitting errors, a stuff block by Gergen and Kuhn, a service ace from Moster, and kills from Sauer and Kuhn gave the Jackets a 22-18 lead. With the score 27-22, the Blue Raiders got back into the game, scoring on a Blue Raider kill, a blocking error from Moster and a hitting error from Stegemann to narrow the gap to 27-25. Moster responded with a kill to make the score 28-25, but a kill from Lyra and a hit just outside the line from Moster made it 28-27. Moster came right back with a kill cross court and a stuff block from Gergen and Moster gave Tech the 30-27 win. In the game, Moster led the way with eight kills while hitting .429 and Aston posted five digs. Showers' ran the offense, recording 13 assists in the game.
The Jackets took an early 10-8 lead on two kills from Randall, a kill from Stegemann, and a kill behind the setter from Gergen. MTSU tied the score at 10-10 on a hitting error from Kuhn and a kill from Lyra. After Tech came back to take a 14-11 lead on kills from Randall and Gergen, the Blue Raiders scored on two reception errors by Mohs and a hitting error from Randall to take a 15-14 lead. The Jackets answered with a kill from Gergen, tying the score at 15-15, and then took a 16-15 lead on a hitting error from Lyra which sailed out of bounds. The Blue Raiders came right back with a kill off the hands from Lyra to tie the score at 16-16. Following that MTSU kill, Tech went on a 14-6 scoring run, and won the final point of the game on a kill from Showers, 30-22.
