Entering her second season as an assistant coach under Bond Shymansky is Jennifer Carey, a former standout setter at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. Carey serves as the Yellow Jackets' offensive coordinator while also assisting in recruiting and operations for the program.
Carey, who works primarily with setters Allie Niekamp and Mary Ashley Tippins, saw the Yellow Jacket offense average 15.68 kills and 14.68 assists per game in her first year on the Flats. Niekamp posted 1,117 assists despite missing nine matches due to illness, but still had the highest per-game average of her career (11.88) under Carey's tutelage. The three-time All-Western Conference setter (from 1999-2002) also assisted in Tippins' transition into college, as the Yellow Jacket freshman posted more than 500 assists and 100 digs despite starting just 11 matches her first year.
Carey arrived at Georgia Tech by way of Texas A&M, where she was the director of volleyball operations from 2005-06. As a member of the Aggie volleyball staff, Carey was responsible for planning team travel and maintaining the equipment budget while serving as the liason between the program and the academic, financial aid and business offices.
During her tenure at Texas A&M, Carey also served as the tournament director for the 2005 NCAA College Station Regional as well as all home tournaments for the Aggies, and occasionally joined the radio broadcasts for Aggie volleyball matches.
In addition to her work at Texas A&M, Carey was the head coach of the Brazos Valley Volleyball Club in College Station from 2005-06 and led the squad to a 27-2 record over the two-year period. Prior to moving to College Station, she also served as the head coach for the Saddleback Valley Volleyball Club in Lake Forest, Calif., where she guided the team to a 32-3 record from 2004-05.
Carey began school at Hawai'i in 1999 and became the Rainbow Wahine's starting setter as a freshman, earning All-Western Athletic Conference second-team honors while leading the team to a 29-2 record, an NCAA Regional Semifinal appearance and a No. 8 final ranking. She went on to direct the Rainbow Wahine to two NCAA semifinal appearances, two No. 3 final rankings and a 123-12 record in her four-year career. She was a three-time member of the All-WAC second team and concluded her career ranked fourth in the Rainbow Wahine's record books with 3,540 assists in her four years in Honolulu.
After earning her degree in business administration in marketing from Hawai'i in 2003, Carey worked as a sales and marketing executive for KHNL and K5 Television in Honolulu, where she also provided commentary on selected men's and women's volleyball matches at the University of Hawai'i, before moving on to play professionally in the fall of 2004.
Carey, 28, currently resides in Atlanta.
