Georgia Tech's Amanda McDowell Tabbed ITA National Player of the Year

June 6, 2008

ATLANTA - Georgia Tech sophomore Amanda McDowell has been named the National Player of the Year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). She becomes the first female student-athlete in school history to be recognized as the top player in the nation in her sport.

A 2006 graduate of Marist School in Atlanta, McDowell captured the first NCAA Singles title in Georgia Tech history in just her second collegiate season in 2008, ending the year on a 15-match winning streak. She set a new school record in singles victories with a 45-8 mark this season and finished her second year on the Flats with a career singles record of 84-18.

McDowell earned the first national honor of her career this year when she was tabbed a singles All-American by the ITA, joining graduating senior Kristi Miller as the only singles All-Americans in school history. She was also named to the All-ACC team for the first time in her career in 2008.

The 5-5 Yellow Jacket standout was also one of six collegiate women's tennis players selected to compete on the USTA Summer Collegiate Team in 2008, where she will play within a team-oriented environment on the USTA Pro Circuit during the summer months.

McDowell's NCAA Championship match against Baylor's Zuzana Zemenova will be aired on the Tennis Channel Tuesday, June 10 at 8 p.m. and again at 11 p.m.
