Marcelle, Brown, Rudman Named Student-Athletes of the Week

Catcher Savannah Brown of the Yellow Jacket softball team, thrower Steve Marcelle from the men's track and field team and tennis standout Tarryn Rudman were honored Monday as the Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of April 2-8.

Brown, a junior from San Diego, Calif., led the 24th-ranked Yellow Jackets to four victories in five games last week, including an Atlantic Coast Conference series win over Florida State.

For the week, Brown hit .533 with a 1.333 slugging percentage as she belted four home runs and collected nine runs batted in.

In a 9-1 victory over the Seminoles, Brown set a Georgia Tech record with three home runs while driving in six. She now has 29 career homers to rank third in Tech history.

Marcelle, a freshman from Green Bay, Wis., set a personal-best and NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 178 feet, 6 inches in the men's discus to win the win the event for the Tech track and field team at the Tiger Classic in Auburn, Ala. That was the fourth-best throw in school history. Marcelle then place second in the shot put with another NCAA Regional qualifying mark at 58 feet, 3-1/4 inches.

For Marcelle, that was his second straight outstanding performance. Last week he was honored as the ACC Track and Field performer of the Week after setting the school record in the shot put with a throw of 60 feet, 1/2 inch.

Rudman, a senior from Johannesburg, South Africa, went undefeated in singles and doubles to help the sixth-ranked women's tennis team to a ACC wins over Wake Forest and NC State.
