Tech Basketball Hosts Fourth-Annual Women Out Front Celebration
Jan. 16, 2008
ATLANTA -
The Georgia Tech women's basketball team in conjunction with The Wreckin' Crew, the team's booster organization, will host the fourth-annual Women Out Front celebration on Thurs., Jan. 24 with a breakfast that will be held in the Hyder Room at Alexander Memorial Coliseum on Georgia Tech's campus.
Women Out Front was started so that the young women who will lead our country tomorrow can show appreciation for those who have paved the way today. The two groups will welcome 19 outstanding women, who have made a significant impact in their individual fields in the Atlanta area or in women's basketball, into the class of 2008. The 19 women will also be recognized at halftime of the Tech vs. Duke women's game that evening.
"I am proud to help honor these esteemed leaders within our community," Asst. A.D./Senior Women Administrator Theresa Wenzel said. "They have each had an impact not only in their chosen professions but for the next generation of women to follow."
Recently hired Marynell Meadors of the new Atlanta WNBA franchise will be on hand as the 2008 keynote speaker. Meadors has had a lifetime worth of coaching experience at both the collegiate and professional levels. She spent 20 seasons at Tennessee Tech and led her team to six consecutive Tennessee State Championships. She is the first major women's collegiate coach to win 350 games at one institution. Meadors also spent 10 years as the Head Coach at Florida State University. She has been inducted in both the Tennessee Tech and Ohio Valley Conference Hall of Fame.
Atlanta will be her fourth stop in the WNBA. She entered the league in its inaugural season as the Head Coach and General Manager of the now-defunct Charlotte Sting and led the team to playoff appearances in each of its first two seasons. In 1999, Meadors joined the Miami Sol for one season as director of scouting. Most recently, she was an assistant coach with the Washington Mystics from 2005-2007.
