Tech Men 10th, Women 15th At NCAA South Region Championships
Nov. 15, 2008
Freshman Mary Kate DuBard finished 22nd to pace the Georgia Tech women's cross country team to a 15th place finish at the 2008 NCAA South Region Championships in Maryville, Tenn. The men placed 10th in the 10K race Saturday.
"Mary Kate ran a great race and we are so happy for her to make the All-South Region team," head coach Alan Drosky said. "The ladies finished strong but there needs to be more depth behind our first two runners."
DuBard, a freshman from Rock Hill, S.C., led the Yellow Jackets for the sixth time this year as she crossed the line in a season-best time of 21:41 on the 6,000-meter trail. Her top-25 finish puts her on the NCAA All-South Region team. DuBard was followed by classmate Annie Martin, who came in 51st place with a time of 22:44.
Sophomore Felicity Brower (96th) and senior Veronica Kindard (106th) were the next two in for the Jackets, crossing the line in times of 23:43 and 24:00, respectively. Rounding out the top five for Tech was freshman Betsy Kim with a time of 24:13.
The Tech women scored 379 points, as Florida State took the title with 41 points.
Senior Nazar Trilisky crossed the line in 35th place with a time of 33:03 to lead the men at the championship meet. The men scored 263 points, as Alabama took the region with 49 points.
"The men ran a good solid race as they have been doing all year long," Drosky added. "They just didn't have enough up front to push for a higher finish, but overall they ran well."
Crossing the line fourth for the men's team was junior Billy Mateker, who crossed 57th overall with a time of 33:41. Sophomore D.J. McMillan closed out the top five for the Jackets with an 83rd-place finish in a time of 34:24.
