Muguruza-Smith Reach Finals of Georgia Tech Fall Invitational

ATLANTA - Juniors Miguel Muguruza and Ryan Smith captured a pair of doubles wins to reach the Division A final, and Georgia Tech picked up five singles wins in consolation draws Sunday at the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. Muguruza and Smith defeated the Georgia duo of Drake Bernstein and Alex Hill, 9-8 (8) in the quarterfinal round Sunday, then knocked out Rafael Array and Mikk Irdoja of Armstrong Atlanta, 8-6. They will face the Clemson tandem of Carlos Alvarez and Gera Boryachinskiy at 9:30 a.m. Monday for the championship. In consolation rounds of singles Sunday, Muguruza downed Davis Taylor of Auburn, 6-2, 6-3, while freshman Magin Ortiga dispatched Georgia's Hill, 7-6 (9), 6-1, and senior Austin Roebuck made quick work of Taylor Patrick of Tennessee, 6-0, 6-1. Junior Doug Kenny won a pair of consolation matches against Georgia Southern players in Division B, defeating William Adeimy in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, and Trenton Spinks, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1. Championship matches in singles Monday morning feature Rhyne Williams of Tennessee against teammate Matteo Fago in Division A and Illia Ziamtsov of UNC-Wilmington against teammate Alex Wetherell. In Division B doubles, Max Ando Hirsch of UNC-W will face Jose Carlos Tolentinno and Dan Regan of Armstrong Atlantic. POTVIN FALLS IN D'NOVO ALL-AMERICAN PRE-QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT Eliot Potvin won his second-round match Sunday at the pre-qualifying event at the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championship in Tulsa, Okla., but dropped his third-round match. The junior from Hampden, Maine downed Jon Wiegand of Texas, 7-5, 6-4, but lost to Dmitry Lebedev of Arkansas, 6-4, 7-5. Still, he received a berth in the qualifying rounds that begin Monday due to a player pulling out.
