Castro Falls in Third Round of U.S. Amateur

Aug. 25, 2006

ATLANTA - Unable to consistently make putts during his third-round match, Roberto Castro played even with Webb Simpson through 13 holes Friday, but faltered over the next four holes and lost 2 and 1 to the Wake Forest player in the U.S. Amateur Championship at Chaska, Minn.

Castro dropped behind Simpson when the Demon Deacon junior birdied the par-4 14th hole. After halving the next two holes, Simpson won the match when Castro made bogey on the par-3 17th.

"I just didn't make many putts today," said Castro, a senior from Alpharetta, Ga., who returns to Tech for his senior year Monday, "but I had a lot of fun here."

It was a strong finish to the summer for the All-American, who was at level par through 17 holes Friday and was 3-under-par for 49 holes in his three matches. He will lead the Yellow Jackets in search of their 10th consecutive NCAA Championship berth beginning Sept. 15-17, when Tech hosts the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga.
