Golf Team Ties for Sixth at Isleworth
Oct. 28, 2008
Windermere, Fla. -
On a day when scores ballooned across the board in cold weather and windy conditions, Georgia Tech held its position despite a 20-over-par score and tied for sixth place in the final standings at the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational.
All-American Cameron Tringale and freshman Minghao Wang each shot 75 Tuesday to pace the 17th-ranked Yellow Jackets and complete top-20 finishes individually at the 7,544-yard Isleworth Golf and Country Club. Tringale, a senior from Laguna Niguel, Calif., finished at 2-over-par 218 and tied for 10th place, his third top-10 showing in four fall tournaments. Wang, making his debut as a counting member of Tech's travel team, tied for 20th at 7-over-par 223.
"Cameron had a very good fall," said head coach Bruce Heppler. "And Ming played very well. The two tournaments he's played in are very positive. We've had some new guys get a chance to play this fall, we've finished well the last three tournaments, and I think we're going in the right direction. We beat some pretty good teams here."
Fourth-ranked Georgia (3-over-par for the tournament) shot 8-over-par Tuesday, but nevertheless completed a runaway victory by 16 shots over No. 11 Alabama (20-over), who shot 22-over-par Tuesday. No. 20 Indiana (22-over) finished third, followed by No. 35 Texas Tech (24-over) and No. 3 Southern California (30-over).
Tech finished at 31-over and tied with No. 11 Clemson while finishing ahead of No. 6 Stanford (37-over), No. 1 Oklahoma State (38-over), No. 5 Illinois (42-over) and No. 7 South Carolina.
"It's a hard course when the wind turns up like it did," said Heppler. "We could have saved a few shots here and there, but we competed for 18 holes in some tough conditions."
