Oct. 10, 2009
Macon, Ga. - Freshman Bo Andrews fired a 2-under-par 70 Saturday to pace Georgia Tech in the first round of the Brickyard Collegiate, but the Yellow Jackets were unable to overcome a poor start and finished the day in 12th place at 10-over 298.Complete results and tee times The 21st-ranked Yellow Jackets, who played even-par golf on the back side of the 7,175-yard Brickyard at Riverside course, find themselves 16 strokes behind Augusta State. The Jaguars were the only team to post a sub-par team score, coming in at 6-under 282 after three players broke par and the other two were even. They lead Chattanooga and Virginia Commonwealth, each at 3-over 291, by nine strokes. Clemson, LSU and North Florida are tied for fourth place at 5-over 293, with Mississippi in seventh (+6). Florida State, Virginia Tech and Penn State are tied for eighth (+8), and Charlotte is in 11th (+9). "Bo had a great round today, and Ming missed several short putts that would have given him a much better round," said head coach Bruce Heppler. "But we need our older guys to shoot better scores than they did today. Other than Augusta State running away, the scores were fairly high today." Four of Tech's five players stumbled out of the gate. Chesson Hadley, a junior from Raleigh, N.C., had four bogeys and a double bogey in his first five holes, while Paul Haley, a junior from Dallas, Texas, had three bogeys and a double in his first four holes. Even Andrews, from Raleigh, stood at 2-ovet through eight holes, but birdied the ninth and played the back side in 3-under. Only Minghao Wang, a sophomore from Reunion, Fla., avoided early trouble by parring the first nine holes and finished with a 74. Hadley and Haley each carded a 77. Tech junior John-Tyler Griffin, who failed to qualify for the travel team and is playing as an individual, shot a 69 Saturday and is in a six-way tie for the lead. Andrews is tied with Henrik Norlander of Augusta State for seventh place, one shot back. Sophomore James White, also playing as an individual for the Yellow Jackets, is tied for ninth place after posting a 1-under 71. Tech's team tees off at 10 a.m. on the 10th hole Sunday, while White and Griiffin's group of individuals begins at 9 a.m., also on No. 10. BRICKYARD COLLEGIATE Brickyard at Riverside, Macon, Ga.
