Byron Gilbreath, a Georgia Tech basketball assistant coach for two decades, died this week.

Gilbreath served as the longtime assistant coach to John "Whack" Hyder, joining Hyder's staff for the 1955-56 season. He stayed at Tech under Dwane Morrison before retiring following the 1975-76 season.

He retired to his hometown of Gatesville, Texas and lived there until his death. Funeral services were held Saturday, and he was buried in Gatesville.

Before coming to Tech, Gilbreath was the head coach at Austin College in Texas from 1947-55. He is a member of the athletics hall of fame at Austin as well as at Texas Tech, where he played football and basketball in the 1940s.
