Lawal and Williams Named Georgia Tech Student Athletes of the Week

Jan. 5, 2009

ATLANTA - Men's basketball forward Gani Lawal and women's basketball point guard Jacqua Williams have been named Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, Jan. 5, 2008.

Lawal averaged 17.5 points and 10 rebounds in two games last week, hitting 66.7 percent (12-of-18) of his shots from the floor. Held to just one rebound in four minutes by foul trouble in the first half of Tech's 63-58 win over Tennessee State, Lawal lifted Tech to the win in the second half by scoring 12 points and grabbing 15 of his career-high 16 rebounds. In an 88-77 loss at Alabama Saturday, Lawal scored 23 points, 18 of them in the second half (8-of-9 FG) as Tech rallied from a 30-point deficit to make the game close.

Williams scored 16 points, had five assists and four steals in Tech's 77-42 win over Florida A&M. She followed that with a career-high 23 points, while grabbing four rebounds, registering four assists and four steals in the 69-52 win over Tulane. The senior from Seattle, Wash., shot .714 from the field in the Jacket's two games this week. Her defensive presence caused the two opponents to average 21 turnovers against Tech.
