Virginia Stops No. 4 Georgia Tech, 4-2, in Series Opener

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Pitchers Matt Avery, Jeff Kamrath and Casey Lambert teamed to hold the Atlantic Coast Conference's leading offense to two runs as Virginia (27-13, 6-10 ACC) stopped No. 4 Georgia Tech (30-8, 16-3 ACC), 4-2, in the opener of a three-game series at Davenport Field.

Avery started and worked four innings before being removed after the game was halted due to rain on Friday night. He held the Yellow Jackets to one run on four hits and a walk while striking out six.

Kamrath (7-3), the scheduled Sunday starter, took over when the game resumed on Saturday. He worked four innings and allowed one run on six hits and fanned five.

Lambert worked a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his team-leading ninth save of the year.

The Yellow Jackets, who rank second in the nation in scoring at 10.8 runs per game, managed just two runs on 10 hits and left nine runners on base.

Tech starter Lee Hyde (5-2) had a streak of 22 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run snapped and was charged with the loss. The left-hander allowed four runs on five hits in 4.1 innings. Reliever Jared Hyatt worked 3.2 shutout innings.

The Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Mike Trapani doubled and scored on a two-out balk.

Virginia answered with two runs in the bottom of the third inning, scoring twice on a wild play to take a 2-1 lead. With two outs and Tim Henry on second base, Matt Street laced a RBI single to right field. Street moved up to second base on right fielder Jeff Kindel's throw home and then scored when catcher Andy Hawranick's throw sailed into the outfield and center fielder Danny Payne slipped on the wet grass when trying to retrieve the errant throw.

When the game restarted on Saturday afternoon, the Cavaliers struck for a run on a RBI single from Scott Headd to extend the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. A RBI single from Sean Doolittle made the score 4-1 in the fifth inning.

The score remained 4-1 until Tech broke through in the eighth inning. Three straight two-out singles from Jeremy Slayden, Matt Wieters and Jeff Kindel led to a run and cut the lead to 4-2. The Yellow Jackets had a chance to do more damage, but Kamrath struck out Andy Hawranick to end the inning, and Lambert pitched a scoreless ninth to end the game.

Kindel lead the Yellow Jackets with three hits, while Slayden and Wieters had two hits each.

Georgia Tech and Virginia will continue the series on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
