Burns Throws Complete-Game Shutout to Lead Tech Over Georgia State, 3-0

March 21, 2007

Box Score

PANTHERSVILLE, Ga. - Eddie Burns tossed the Yellow Jackets' second complete-game shutout in the last four games to lead Georgia Tech (12-10) to a 3-0 victory over Georgia State (11-12) Wednesday evening at The Field in Panthersville.

After David Duncan became the first Yellow Jacket in four years to throw a complete-game shutout when he did so this past Friday afternoon, Burns repeated the feat Wednesday against cross-town rival Georgia State, giving up five hits while striking out a career-high four batters in his career-long outing.

Burns (1-1) earned the first win of his career in his second start of the season. He entered the game having thrown just 13.2 innings in his career, with 12.1 of those coming in seven appearances this season.

Burns kept the Panthers at bay while nine Georgia State pitchers combined to hold the Jackets to just one hit, a double by Danny Payne in Tech's three-run third inning.

Payne led off the frame with a double and moved to third after Michael Fisher was hit by a pitch and Matt Wieters was issued the first of four walks in the inning. Luke Murton, Brad Feltes and Patrick Long all walked with the bases loaded to account for Tech's three runs in the game.

Bobby Bennett (1-4) took the loss for the Panthers, giving up three runs on one hit while walking three in a third of an inning.

The Yellow Jackets will travel to Durham, NC this weekend for their first road conference series of the season, traveling to Duke for three games beginning Friday at 3 p.m. The Jackets and Blue Devils square off Saturday at 2 p.m. before concluding the series at 1 p.m. Sunday. All three games can be heard on WREK-Radio (91.1 FM/www.wrek.org) while live stats can be found at www.ramblinwreck.com.
