Wieters Powers No. 1 Georgia Tech Past Mississippi Valley State, 13-4

ATLANTA - Matt Wieters hit a three-run home run and Mike Trapani added three RBI to lead top-ranked Georgia Tech (17-1) to a 13-4 win over Mississippi Valley State (7-14) on Wednesday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Tech starter David Duncan (2-0), one of eight Yellow Jacket pitchers used in the game, earned the win by working two innings and allowing one unearned run. Jared Hyatt, Ryan Turner, Brad Rulon, Lee Hyde and Danny Payne each pitched one scoreless inning in relief.

Wieters finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Payne and Wes Hodges each had two hits and two RBI. The Yellow Jackets outhit the Delta Devils, 12-9.

After the Delta Devils took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a RBI groundout from Rod Williams, the Yellow Jackets answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-1 lead. Tech took advantage of four walks from MVSU starter Danny Hall, and Trapani had a two-run single.

Ross Myers had a RBI single in the top of the second inning to pull the Delta Devils to within 4-2.

Georgia Tech broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning that made the score 10-2. The Yellow Jackets sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning, highlighted by a three-run homer from Wieters, his second of the year, a two-run double from Hodges and a RBI double from Payne.

The Delta Devils cut the score to 10-4 with a RBI single from Williams in the fifth inning and a RBI double from pinch hitter Mark Vance in the sixth inning.

 

 

The Yellow Jackets batted around and added three runs in the sixth inning, extending the lead to 13-4.

Georgia Tech visits NC State for a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series this weekend in Raleigh, N.C. Gametimes are 3 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
